The Unexpected Impact of Line Dancing Culture
Written By: Juanita Winston
If you’ve ever found yourself tapping your feet to the beat of “Cupid Shuffle” or stepping in time with “The Electric Slide,” then you already know the magic of line dancing. Line dancing isn’t just a fun way to move — it’s a rich cultural expression that encourages movement and creates community. While the format of line dancing dates back centuries across cultures, Black communities in the U.S. made it their own during the soul, disco, and funk eras of the '70s and '80s. Dances like the “Bus Stop” and “Electric Slide” became community staples at cookouts, family reunions, and church events. By the time the '90s rolled around, line dances like the “Cha Cha Slide” and “Wobble” were not just party favorites — they were cultural touchstones, passed down through generations. Each routine told a story of joy, resilience, and togetherness. |

Building Financial Confidence & Mission to Empower Businesses
![]() Vina Morris ![]() | How I’m Redefining Breast Cancer Awareness Through AfroPink By Vina Morris When I founded AfroPink in 2020, I wasn’t trying to become an entrepreneur — I was trying to survive. After a benign biopsy in April 2019, I underwent a lumpectomy in May. I didn’t get my results until June; no one contacted me after surgery, and the results weren’t released to my patient portal. I had to call myself to obtain the diagnosis, and what I learned stunned me: carcinoma. I was shaken not just by the diagnosis but by the lack of urgency in telling me. That experience showed me how easily someone could fall through the cracks. Then, just six months later, in January 2020, I was diagnosed again. I never set out to “build a brand.” I created AfroPink because I didn’t want other women — or men — to have to go through what I went through. |
